Hiking and Biking in Pipestem

Explore the beauty of West Virginia on over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails. Pipestem’s hiking trails range in difficulty from easy wooded walks to arduous treks up steep inclines (with rewarding views). Some of the most popular trails include: 

  • Canyon Rim Trail (1.7 miles) – This scenic trail has breathtaking overlooks of the Bluestone Gorge.

  • Farley Loop Trail (3 miles): The park’s most rugged trail, Farley Loop takes you through a series of switchbacks to Raven Rock overlook, where you’ll have one of the most beautiful views of the gorge. 

  • Long Branch Trail (3.1 miles) – This moderately challenging route winds through forested areas, with areas where you can view the Bluestone River.

  • Lake Shore Trail (1.2 miles) – A relaxing path that follows the edge of Long Branch Lake, ideal for birdwatching and photography.


Mountain biking in Pipestem is a very popular activity, so check the West Virginia State Parks Map for designated biking and hiking trails. Visitors can rent mountain bikes and e-bikes at the park.

Water Activities: Fishing, Kayaking, and Boating

Pipestem’s lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for water-based recreation. Long Branch Lake is a prime spot for canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding, with equipment rentals available for visitors. These are perfect date activities for couples on a romantic getaway.

Those wishin’ they could just go fishin’ can look forward to the park’s well stocked ponds, with species of trout and bass. The Bluestone River, accessible by the park’s tramway, is a favorite for anglers targeting smallmouth bass and catfish.

Thrill-seekers, rejoice! Head to the Pipestem Adventure Zone, where Pipestem Peaks Zipline Tours offers a series of zip lines stretching over 1.5 miles and soaring 300 feet above the Bluestone River. Riders can experience exhilarating speeds while taking in awe-inspiring views of the Appalachian wilderness.

Why not explore the trails with some company? Explore the park on horseback with guided trail rides. The stables provide horses suitable for all experience levels, offering a unique way to traverse the park’s trails and take in the natural surroundings.

Golfing in Pipestem, WV

Golfers can tee off at Pipestem’s championship 18-hole golf course, designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The course features rolling fairways, challenging bunkers, and stunning mountain views. A nine-hole par-three course is also available for those looking for a shorter, more relaxed game.
